TOUR 2
The Esplanade Walk.
Bass and Flinders Point to Cronulla Beach
We meet at the Bass and Flinders Point monument at the southeastern end of Gowrie Street, Cronulla. There is ample parking on Gowrie Street, a brief walk to the Bass and Flinders Point monument, which is at the end of the street. You can also park in Cronulla's four-hour free public parking station, then catch a Number 971 bus at Cronulla station. Ask the driver to stop at Chelmsford Avenue, which is a short walk to Gowrie Street and the memorial. A taxi rank also adjoins Cronulla station.
Your Cronulla Guided Walks guide can advise transport options for people ending their Tour at Cronulla Beach and returning to Gowrie Street to collect their cars.
Our tour begins where the Hacking River flows into the Tasman Sea.
Here, a memorial marks the voyage in 1796, just eight years after European colonisation began, when early colonial explorers George Bass and Matthew Flinders, with the young William Martin, sailed past to Lake Illawarra, south of Wollongong.
Then, we follow the memorable Esplanade walkway, a stroll along the gorgeous coastline, to Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club.
As we walk, we'll learn about annual whale migrations and visit Cronulla's important World War 2 sites, scenic parks, surfing and diving hotspots, a former nuns' swimming pool, and the more than 100-year-old Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club.
